Your Healthista: 10 Things to Eat When Protein +... →
yourhealthista: By now, you all know that the basic meal formula I go by is meat + veggies + (maybe a little bit of starch) + fat (either in the meat or cooked with the veggies). But sometimes, that combo just doesn’t seem appetizing. Sometimes, when our appetites are low or are stomachs are upset, a juicy steak…

Granola Recipe: My favorite one was: 1 tbs pumpkin seeds 1 tbs sunflower seeds 1 tbs shredded coconut 1 tbs sesame seeds 1 tbs flax seeds 1 tbs local honey I heated the honey up a little bit to make it easier to stir, and added all of the dry ingredients, spread it out on a baking pan (lined with parchment paper) and baked at 350 for about 20 minutes (stirring once or twice in there -...

Long Overdue Updates...
A lot has happened since the middle of the summer. Thank you SO much to those who sent encouraging messages and words of concern! Sorry I haven’t posted forever.. In a nutshell: - Trail running was a terrible plan of recovery for my knee. So was hiking, apparently. Patellar tendinitis is the result, and I’m back in physical therapy, and worried about ski season. 10K definitely did...

Getting back on the wagon...
Well. Time for an update. Things I learned in July: - Running a lot 2 months after knee surgery = a terrible idea. It hurts! 10K training had to be put on hold. - Along the same lines, 16 mile hikes are still too much. Getting there though. - Nightshades are not what’s aggravating my skin (3 weeks without tomatoes, potatoes, bell peppers, no change in skin :(  ) - Sometimes, chocolate...

10K. It's On.
Yup, it’s official! I have 8 weeks. And if my knee doesn’t do too well I’ll switch to running the 5K the same day. I’ve been trying to run a lot lately, and it’s awesome to feel my quads build back up! YES! Anddd I’m thinking I’m going to tweak a ‘normal’ training schedule. One of my favorite runs is 7 miles. If I do intervals of running...

Interesting article about the difference between... →
“Several years ago, Dr. David Rowlands, a senior lecturer with the Institute of Food, Nutrition and Human Health at Massey University in New Zealand, set out to study the role of protein in recovery from hard exercise. He asked a group of male cyclists to ride intensely until their legs were aching and virtually all of their stored muscle fuel had been depleted. The cyclists then consumed...

My 4 mile hike/run felt like a marathon this morning. Zero energy after the first half mile. Legs felt like lead. I think maybe this has to do with not enough sleep/World Cup excitement/whatever? It’s a sweet trail though, with lots of loops around two big lakes that can make the whole thing longer. And seriously, for me to feel unmotivated even with this scenery??? Definitely an off day....

Happy Summer!
Sunrise was awesome! Tooootally worth missing a few hours of sleep. Waited for the full sunrise at this spot and then went on a 6 mile hike/trail run - it was so cool to be out that early in the morning! Zero people and everything looks totally different in early morning light. But I’m having a hard time figuring out what to do about food - if I’m awake and active for 18-19 hours...

Solstice hikes!
Summer solstice = longest day of the year = 15 hours of daylight = sunrise hike (at like 5:45am) and sunset hike (around 9)? Yes please! I’m thinking sunrise from somewhere above this lake. 6 mile hike. Perfect. I’ll figure out the sunset one tomorrow. I’m excited!!!

Hiking!
7.3 mile hike! Yeahhh! Was a little nervous about pushing it that far, so didn’t run at all, and the steep uphills are still giving my knee trouble. But otherwise it was awesome, it’s like it’s finally summer here or something! I’ve been stretching for the past 2 hours too, so hopefully I won’t feel like death in the morning. My gym today :)

I CAN RUN!!!
Well.. sort of. Went on a hike yesterday and got caught in hail and lightning. Tested out the knee with some trail running. And it actually wasn’t that bad! (Plus, close lightning is a really great motivating factor). It was probably about a mile of running total. But it was great. To even try to run. And I LOVE running in the rain! And I’m ecstatic that I finally feel some sort of...

Ohhh, Hikes.
- Coffee? Check. - Switzerland - Spain game? Check (Halftime, so… half-check?) yay switzerland!!! - Breakfast? Check. - Excitement for the 6 mile hike I planned in detail last night? Not so much. It’s cold and drizzling. And my knee is stiff, dammit (pretty sure it actually CAN predict the weather???). BUT the camera battery is charged and all my stuff’s already in the car. So...

Summer Goals
Medium Term Goal List I want: - to fit into the jeans I was wearing 2 years ago!! seriously. i love them and want to wear them. - to be able to run a 6 mile trail without knee pain, and without wanting to die. - to finally figure out the food/increased athletic performance deal. - to find a substitute for snacking on cheese! (it’s kind of a problem). - to feel confident in any outfit....
